Heartbeat monitoring
Know when a scheduled job did not run, not just when a website is down.
Heartbeat monitors turn monitoring around: instead of us calling you, your job calls a private URL every time it finishes. If no ping arrives within the expected interval plus the grace period, the monitor goes down, an incident opens and your contacts are alerted. The next ping resolves it.
- 1
Add a monitor and choose Heartbeat.
- 2
Set the expected interval (how often the job should run) and a grace period for jobs that sometimes run late.
- 3
Save, then copy the ping URL from the monitor page.
- 4
Call the URL at the end of your job. GET and POST both work.
# crontab example: ping only when the backup succeeded 0 2 * * * /usr/local/bin/backup.sh && curl -fsS https://monitermysite.com/api/heartbeat/<your-token> > /dev/null
# GitHub Actions step - name: Report success if: success() run: curl -fsS https://monitermysite.com/api/heartbeat/<your-token>
Important
Keep the ping URL private. Anyone who has it can mark your job as healthy.
